Etiquette on Wearing Black to a Wedding
When it comes to your attire, wedding etiquette just isn’t what it used to be. Many brides no longer stick to the traditional guidelines and allow their guests a little more freedom. While black is acceptable to wear to a wedding, there are still a few guidelines to consider when choosing what to wear to the big event. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Black is Acceptable
-
In the past wearing black to a wedding was completely taboo as it was typically the color of choice to wear to a funeral. It was also considered to reflect a negative connotation in opposition of the marriage. Now, it is completely acceptable to wear black to a wedding. Black is a classy and sophisticated color that looks great year round.
What Does the Invite Say?
-
Your choice of black wedding attire greatly depends on what is specified in the invite. If it’s an evening wedding, with semi-formal or formal dress required, a little black dress would be the perfect attire. However, if the wedding is held in early afternoon you may consider a black skirt with a colored shirt.

What is the Wedding Theme?
-
The theme of the wedding does have a say in your black attire. For instance, you wouldn’t wear a black cocktail dress if the wedding has a beach theme. Or, if the invite states casual dress, you wouldn’t want to show up in something that takes any attention away from the bride. Although you can still wear black, you may want to go for a black sundress or t-shirt dress with matching sandals.
Accessorize with Color
-
While black is entirely acceptable, you may want to throw in a little color with your accessories. Because it’s a wedding, a touch of color reflects a celebration rather than mourning. Perhaps a pastel belt or scarf for an outside, afternoon wedding. Bright red lipstick always sets off a black cocktail dress for a semi-formal wedding in the evening.
