Traditional Electric Fans

Floor fans can provide a powerful, one-directional breeze.

Traditional fans are those that circulate air through the use of blades that move in a circular motion. During the hot summer months, using electric fans can help keep your home cool while also decreasing your home’s dependence on air conditioning. There are various types of electric fans, and finding the one that’s best suited to your needs requires understanding what each type is designed to do. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Ceiling Fans

    • As the name implies, these fans hang from the ceiling. Sometimes they are wired so that they can be turned on using a light switch. Other times they are turned on and off using a hang-down pull chain. Some have a built-in light fixture so that the fan serves both to cool down and light a room. They usually have several speed settings. The blades come in a variety of widths, shapes and finishes to make the fan not just functional, but also integrated with a room’s decor.

    Pedestal Fans

    • A pedestal fan consists of a round fan with enclosed blades (for safety) mounted on a pole leading to a base. That base is often height-adjustable and can be anywhere from a few inches to a few feet tall. These are usually oscillating fans, meaning that the fan rotates from side to side in a pendulum motion. This allows the fan to distribute a cool breeze around an entire room, not just to a fixed spot.

    Floor Fans

    • Floor fans are a lot like pedestal fans in that they mainly consist of blades enclosed for safety. However, these fans are not mounted on a pole leading to a stand, like pedestal fans. Rather, they sit close to the ground in a metal or plastic base that is attached to the fan enclosure’s left and right sides. They don’t oscillate from side to side, but can typically be adjusted so that the fan points straight ahead, up or downward.

    Tower Fans

    • Tower fans tend to look a lot like the popular stand-alone air-filtration systems available for home use. A tower fan consists of several small fans hidden inside, running simultaneously. The air created gets blown out through a panel on the front of the fan. A tower fan usually includes various speed settings, remote control, automatic shut-off timer and LCD screen. People often choose these types of fans because they take up less space and have a sleeker design. However, these fans also tend to come with a price tag higher than that of pedestal or floor fans.
