You can record movies with your Mac.

If you have an iMac or a MacBook with a built-in iSight camera, or a Mac Pro or Mac Mini desktop computer with an external iSight camera plugged into one of its USB ports, you can shoot movies on your Mac using software that comes already installed, and then play it with iMovie. If you don’t hear any sound in an iSight movie, you’ll need to check some settings in iMovie or on your Mac.

  1. Recording with iSight Camera

    • You can record videos with your iSight camera using Photo Booth, QuickTime and iMovie. Photo Booth is Apple’s native application for shooting pictures and videos. The camera activates automatically as soon as you launch the application and start recording. Apple’s native QuickTime video player plays movies and also enables you to make recordings with the iSight camera. IMovie is Apple’s native application for editing movies on your Mac, and it has a feature to record videos directly into an iMovie project with an iSight camera. You can also use iMovie to import videos that you shot with the iSight camera using QuickTime or Photo Booth.

    IMovie Volume

    • An iSight camera has a microphone that is always on, so if you are using an iSight camera to record a video, the audio will record simultaneously. When you play an iSight video in iMovie, but do not hear anything, it may be because the video clip’s audio is muted. Click the video clip to select it, then click “Edit” from the iMovie menu, and then click “Unmute Clip.” If you still don’t hear any audio, hover over the clip until you see a gear icon. Click the gear icon, and then click “Audio Adjustments.” Drag the volume slider from left to right to increase the volume of the clip.

    System Volume

    • If you don’t hear any audio when you play a video in iMovie that you shot with the Mac’s iSight camera, you might need to adjust the Mac’s system volume control. Click the volume icon at the upper right of the Finder menu, and then drag the volume control slider upward to increase the volume.

    Earphones and Speakers

    • If you have verified that your iSight video clip in iMovie is not muted and that you have increased the volume using the video clip’s audio settings, and also verified that you have increased the Mac’s system volume, the problem could be that you have external speakers that are turned off, or headphones plugged into the Mac’s audio-out port. Look on the back of the Mac and see if a cable is plugged into the audio-out port, which is marked with an icon of headphones. If external speakers are plugged in, check that they are plugged into a power source or have working batteries, power them on, and then adjust the volume according to the speaker manufacturer’s instructions. If you have headphones plugged into the Mac’s audio out port or into the headphone port on your external speakers, unplug the headphones to see if you can now hear audio.
