To take up a position in New Jersey, bartenders must be legally allowed to live and work in the United States. According to Workpermit.com, non-US citizens may still obtain authorization to work by acquiring sponsorship from an employer or by a close family member in the United States, through the diversity visa lottery program or by obtaining asylum or refugee status.
Under the 21st amendment to the United States Constitution, each state has the right to determine how it regulates alcoholic beverages. In New Jersey, the unit of state government charged with regulating the commerce of alcoholic beverages is the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control. Though bartenders do not require a license to perform their duties, completing some form of training program can help secure a job. There are also some requirements that candidates must fulfill prior to taking up a position.
Although a person must be at least 21 years old to legally purchase and consume an alcoholic beverage on licensed premises, bartenders, waiters and sales clerk are able to serve alcoholic beverages from the age of 18 in New Jersey. Similarly, the lawful age at which a person can own a license and purchase alcoholic products for resale is 18 years old.
A number of organizations offer forms of certification. For example, Rserving.com and Servercertificationcorp.com provide home-study courses designed to teach responsible serving skills to bartenders. Courses cost approximately $20 and explain how to spot someone who has drank too much, how to check identification, and the responsibilities and liabilities of the server.
Formal bartender training programs exist in New Jersey, some of which have job placement assistance programs. The National Bartenders School of Woodbridge has been training bartenders for more than two decades. It offers training in organization, customer service and alcohol awareness. Students can attend afternoon or morning classes for two weeks or undertake a once-week accelerated course. Candidates in New Jersey may also study a three-week course at the Mixology Wine Institute in Cherry Hill.
