Android is bringing Linux to the forefront of mobile computing.

With the recent success of Android, which is built on Linux version 2.6, the alternative operating system has caught the attention of developers and users of tablets and smartphones. Although Windows has been far more successful on desktop computers, Linux is beginning to stand out in the mobile computing world. The features that the operating system possesses and Windows lacks are what make Linux intriguing.

  1. Multiple Workspaces

    • Separating research on different workspaces is a feature that enhances multitasking. One workspace can be used for personal things like Facebook, Twitter and Google+. Another workspace can be reserved for business purposes. A quick key combination can switch between the two screens to help keep you organized.

    Centralized Application Installation

    • Android users are familiar with this feature. If an application is needed for a specific use, Android users go to the "Market" to find most of what they need. Ubuntu, a Linux-based operating system, has a software center where many applications can be found. The third version of the Ubuntu Software Center is to include commercial applications as well.

    Root Security

    • Any Windows users whose system has a virus can appreciate the root security that Linux offers. For an application to use the root of the computer, a separate password known as the "root password" is needed. With this level of security in place, a user is able to determine if email attachments and websites are trying to install potentially malicious software.

    Lightweight OS

    • A big advantage that Linux has over Windows when it comes to mobile computing is the lightweight nature of the operating system. The system takes up little space and uses less memory than Windows. With the future pointing toward smartphones, tablets and smart appliances, staying light will play to the advantage of Linux.

    Multiple Users

    • Linux operating systems can have multiple users logged in at the same time without requiring a separate user license. Multiple Windows users cannot be logged in with a server version of the operating system. Linux multiuser access is built into the operating system.

    Hardware Detection

    • At times a device may require a driver update to function properly. Windows has the ability to search for drivers, but if they cannot be found, knowing the details of the hardware is important. For example, in most cases, the average user does not know the model number of the graphics card in order to search for new drivers. With Linux, a simple command will get information about the device for the user.
