What Does Mother of the Groom Wear to a Formal Evening Wedding?
Though an old custom, the mother of the groom should still wait for the mother of the bride to select her formal attire for the wedding. Both mothers should wear outfits that complement each other, as well as the attire of the bridal party. Wedding photos will look more balanced if everyone has coordinated outfit styles and colors.

Color
-
A mother of the groom’s dress should be a neutral color or one that is a lighter shade from the bridesmaid’s dress color. Some appropriate colors for her dress include lavender, silver, royal blue, hunter green, some pastels and burgundy. Black is an appropriate color for a formal event, but it can mean that the mother of the groom does not approve of the wedding. Before selecting a black dress, consult the bride to see how she feels about the color.
Length
-
Formal occasions call for floor-length gowns worn with heels. Heels should be both comfortable and appropriate for the wedding. Tea-length dresses are also acceptable for a formal wedding.
-
Accessories
-
Jewelry should be appropriate and not overdone. Simple gold or silver necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings are acceptable. Elbow length gloves should be worn during the ceremony and can be removed for the reception. Hats should only be worn if both of the mothers will be wearing one.
Avoid
-
The mother of the groom should avoid selecting a dress that resembles a wedding dress in design or color. Other flashy colors to avoid include hot pink, neon green and electric blue. Watches should not be worn with a formal gown.
