Craft actvitites show children how to put the Good Samaritan story into practice.

Jesus told the thought-provoking tale of the Good Samaritan, about a man who helped an injured and beaten man at the side of the road when nobody else did. The New Testament tale teaches children from a young age the Christian values of love, caring and always being willing to help others. To help kindergarten children understand Jesus' story, you can make several engaging and fun crafts.

  1. Play Crafts

    • Acting out the role of the Good Samaritan will help children remember the story. You can do this by getting the children to make their own masks out of paper plates and rubber bands to depict the characters, and using role-play to act out the scene.

The children can also make their own figures from salt dough, or create simple sock or paper puppets and make them act out the story.

    Giving Crafts

    • Making and giving their own crafts to others allows kindergarten children to gain a practical understanding of the kindness shown in the story.

Many children enjoy eating candies and cookies, and the children can make their own candy gifts. They can fill cardboard tubes with small candies, and decorate it with their drawings of the Good Samaritan. You can seal the cardboard ends with colored tissue paper, using a rubber band to keep it tightly closed. The kindergarten children can then give it to someone they know, perhaps an elderly or unwell relative.

    Art Crafts

Kindergarten children enjoy drawing and painting. The children can draw a picture of the injured man and the Good Samaritan helping him. You can use paint or crayons. Also try expanding the tale by asking the children to draw a picture of an occasion somebody helped them, and ask them to explain how they felt when somebody came to their aid. In addition, young kindergarten children can color in already-made drawings of the Good Samaritan (see Resources).

    Card Crafts

    • Children and learn the values of kindness by making their own cards.

You can teach young children to show compassion to others by making their own cards. Fold some A4 cards in half, and let the kindergarten children draw pictures and design their cards. You can help out with the writing, or help children with letter stickers to write a short message.

Another important lesson for children to learn is to say thank you when someone has been kind to them, and children can also make their own thank-you cards in the same way, thanking a relative for a specific act or simply being there for them.
