What Attire Is Appropriate for a Morning Wedding in the Winter?
While many people associate wedding with the late spring and early summer, many couples are planning their nuptials during the cold winter months. If you’re invited to a winter wedding that’s scheduled for the morning hours, deciding what to wear can be a challenge. However, by keeping a few guidelines in mind when choosing your outfit, you can avoid being the guest that others look at and say “I can’t believe she wore that.” Does this Spark an idea?

Style and Colors
-
In general, morning weddings are more casual than evening weddings, regardless of the season. You most likely will not receive an invitation to a black tie, or black tie optional, event that takes place in the morning. For that reason, leave the tuxedos and fancy gowns and cocktail dresses in the closet. Instead, wear semi-formal clothing; a navy or charcoal suit for men, with a dress shirt and tie, and a simple dress, suit or skirt outfit for women. When you’re going to a morning wedding, you can wear brighter colors – think jewel tones – but avoid summery shades that would look out of place on a cold winter day.
Outfit Ideas
-
Unless you live in the deep south, where winter temperatures are mild, your wedding clothes should be made from heavier, more substantial fabrics that look stylish and keep you warm. For example, pair a cashmere sweater set with velvet pants or a skirt, or pair a wool or tweed sheath dress with a cardigan or jacket. If the wedding is held outdoors, despite the temperatures, avoid wearing flowing or loose fitting skirts that could blow around, and choose a fitted style or wear pants. Avoid skirts and dresses that are too short, and save the strapless or cleavage baring tops for a night on the town.

Accessories
-
Morning weddings tend to be less glamorous events than those held in the evening and, as a result, your accessories and styling should be more subdued. Choose one statement accessory, such as a bold beaded necklace, and keep your other accessories simple. Simple makeup and hair is your best bet; choose a style that won’t get crushed by your winter hat or blow around in the wind. Leave the stilettos at home, and instead wear a wedge or chunky heeled boot or shoe, since there’s a good chance you’ll encounter ice or puddles when you’re walking from the car to the church or the reception.
Outerwear
-
Regardless of whether the wedding is taking place indoors or out, you’ll need to wear some sort of outerwear. You might have a great look going, but wearing a ski parka and silly winter hat can ruin the effect. Instead, wear a dress coat and stylish hat, such as a beret or cloche, with matching leather or wool gloves. In general, dress coats should be longer than your skirt; men’s topcoats should be calf-length.
