StumbleUpon Blog Tricks

StumbleUpon is a social media sharing service that allows millions of people to recommend places on the Internet. Once you've set up an account and plugged in your preferences, you can jump from site to site, finding things that are interesting to you. This can be a powerful blog-building tool since millions of potential viewers are available. The trick is getting them to see your blog from all the options available.

  1. Blog Integration

    • Add a StumbleUpon badge to your blog so that readers can stumble your content without leaving your site. Browse to stumbleupon.com/badges and then click on the type of badge you want from the options on the left. Copy the code that appears in the box in the middle of the page. Open your blog template for editing and paste the code in just before the body section of your blog. There are instructions specific to each blog service on the badge creation site if you need more help.

    Stumble Your Own Blog

    • Clicking the "Like" button on your StumbleUpon toolbar when you're looking at your own blog post is a good way to get your blog listed on the StumbleUpon servers. The trick is only doing it every so often. If you over-stumble your own stuff, your profile's weight will be dropped, but if you stumble high-quality sites that get a positive reaction from other stumblers, your profile will gain weight. Then, every stumble you make will be worth more.

    Share Stumbler's Profiles

    • Engage in the community aspect of StumbleUpon. If you find a stumbler who has similar interests to your own, you can click to see her page on stumbleupon.com. Then use the "Like" button from the StumbleUpon toolbar to share that page along with a note about how you like that person. She'll get more traffic and, hopefully, return the favor.

    Join a StumbleUpon Group

    • Blogger groups that coordinate their StumbleUpon activity end up multiplying their effectiveness. These groups function once or twice a week to connect StumbleUpon to each other's blogs. It generally works via an email list with links to the posts and, perhaps, a review of the content ready to be copied into the StumbleUpon form. Contact bloggers that you regularly interact with to see if they already have a group or offer to create one from among your StumbleUpon followers.
