God Loves Me Craft Ideas

After an adult reads verses such as John 3:16, children can work on a craft about God's love.

One of the first Sunday school lessons children learn is that God loves them. In addition to Bible stories and traditional songs such as "Jesus Loves Me," children enjoy all types of crafts to further communicate God's love to them and engage them in creative projects.

  1. Love Door Hanger

    • You can draw a door hanger template or print one out from the Internet. Color and cut out the template with adult help as needed. If you are drawing your own door hanger, write spell out love in large letters, inside hearts, and cut them out. Draw or print out a picture of Jesus and cut that out, too. Kids can fill in the letters of the word love with glue and glitter. They can also glue the letters onto foam or card stock squares, circles or diamonds just slightly larger than the hearts. Next, adhere each letter and the picture of Jesus to a strip of ribbon, card stock, or construction paper and hang it over the child's bedroom door handle.

    Thumbody Loves Me

    • Make thumbprint art on paper. You can choose from several thumbprint creations, then add details with a black marker. For a thumbprint caterpillar, add legs and face to the caterpillar. For a thumbprint butterfly, use four prints of the same color and add antenna and a body. Make a thumbprint sun, mixing yellow, red and orange. A thumbprint flower will use four or five prints for the petals and two green leaf prints. Add a center and a stem. All art work can include the saying "Thumbody loves me, God, that's who!"

    Colored Cross

    • Draw a cross shape on plain, white paper using a ruler. Write the words, "Jesus Loves Me" on the finished cross. Children can glue this on a piece of card stock or construction paper and then color the cross. Older students can also adhere the cross to a piece of scrap chipboard, cut this out and then color and embellish the front and paint the back. They can add small flower stickers or draw their own on the bottom of the cross if desired. Finish off the project by decoupaging the cross. Allow it to dry and add magnets to the back or punch a hole in the top and lace a ribbon or piece of yarn through it.

    Tissue Paper Hearts

    • This project works well around Valentine's Day but can be used all year long as well. Cut several dozen hearts out of tissue paper. Write a verse of choice on a plain, white paper plate using a black or red marker. A few ideas include: "John 3:16," "God's heart of love for me," or simply "God loves me." Each child should receive six to 12 hearts, depending on the age of the child. Glue tissue paper hearts onto the paper plate. Punch 12 evenly spaced holes around the outside and lace a long, skinny ribbon through the hole. Tie the ribbon off in a knot or bow. Instead of tissue paper hearts, you could also use foam or punched card stock hearts. Mix and match if you like. You can also write the saying with glitter glue if you wish.
