Dreamweaver Vs. iWeb
Websites can be created and edited by a number of applications, ranging from simple text editors to complex applications such as Apple's iWeb and Adobe Dreamweaver. Both applications accommodate the creation of professional-looking websites, but each takes a different approach to balance the ease of use and customization.
-
WYSIWYG
-
Apple iWeb is a "what-you-see-is-what-you-get" application, allowing entire websites to be created by dragging and dropping elements onto the page. Special functions can be added to each page with widgets and HTML snippets. Even the newest of users can customize their pages and insert easy-to-use, professional-looking features. Adobe Dreamweaver allows files to be imported and placed on the page in "design mode," but most function and usability features must be added with code. This allows substantially more customization and richness to be added by professionals, but limits the ease of use for the inexperienced.
Forms and Elements
-
While iWeb allows the addition of widgets and extra code through HTML snippets, there is no drag and drop method to create forms, tables and other common page elements. While they can be added in an HTML snippet, the user must be able to program the desired addition. Dreamweaver contains insertable forms, tables and other elements, many with a step-by-step walk-through for customization and addition of content.

File Structure
-
Dreamweaver sites are created within a folder structure on your computer and then uploaded in the same structure to your web server. This makes it easy to make links to images or other content on the server, as you know exactly which folder each item resides in. Files in iWeb sites are stored within the site package on your computer and then placed in folders and renamed when uploaded to the web server. While the images are easily placed onto your website, uploading individual files not displayed on your page and obtaining a link to share on another site is difficult and requires the user to explore the files on the server to find the correct item.
Editability
-
Sites created with iWeb are created within a template and are difficult to edit by simply opening the file in a text editor or a code-based, Web development application such as Dreamweaver. To edit a site in iWeb, a Mac computer must be used, and the website's package file must be saved on the computer. Sites created with Dreamweaver do not have extraneous code added by a preset template and are completely portable, meaning they can be opened and edited by any other code-based editor or even a text editor. Dreamweaver sites can be downloaded from the server and edited on Mac, Windows or Linux computers.
