A ranger has a myriad of skills.

To be a state of California parks ranger, a candidate must have extensive education, both from a college or university and in skills specific to a ranger. A ranger must have a clean record, a clean bill of health and knowledge of natural resources. A ranger is a protector of nature, a law enforcement officer, a search and rescue member and much more.

  1. Minimum Requirements

    • California rangers must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver's license. They must have completed two years of a state accredited college or university including 21 credit hours of general education requirements. Ranger candidates cannot be convicted felons and they must pass a background check as well as physical and psychological examinations. They must either be a U.S. citizen or an eligible permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.

    Physical Requirements

    • A ranger must have corrected vision of 20/20 and uncorrected vision of no worse than 20/40. Rangers must be strong, agile, mentally alert, physically sound and have hearing sufficient to perform responsibilities of a ranger. Candidates must be able to swim for self preservation and to direct lifesaving operations.

    Educational Requirements

    • Besides education, ranger candidates must have completed training programs within the last three years in the California Department of Parks and Recreation's basic visitor services, resource management, interpretation and park operations. They must graduate from a Peace Officer Standards and Training Course, have a valid Red Cross First Responder or Advance First Aid Certificate, and a CPR certificate.

    Additional Skills

    • Park rangers must be skilled in dealing with the public, able to handle funds and literate. A ranger must be able to assist in search and rescue operations as well as respond to emergency medical situations. A ranger must have knowledge of firearms and be able to help in enforcement efforts. He must have knowledge of natural resources, environment and wildlife, knowledge of materials used to build natural science displays, and have the ability to plan, organize and direct the work of others.
