Ways to Propose as a Surprise
You love her; she loves you. You know you want to be together and you want to pop the question. We all know the tried and true, down-on-one-knee approach. It's traditional and it's great, but why lock yourself in? Why not step out of convention and knock her off her feet with a proposal that's out of the box?

Sweet Tooth Approach
-
Chocolate is the lover's best friend. Find a local confectioner or bake shop that will make a chocolate box for the ring or have the original box with the ring inside enveloped in a chocolate casing. Mix this with some other candies and make sure it is the largest one so your fiancee will be curious about the one that stands out. Offer to share it, have her crack open the chocolate shell and ... bingo, offer the proposal. This could also work at a restaurant where you are both known; have the server present the box at the end of a long, romantic meal.
It Pays to Advertise
-
Make arrangements beforehand with your local multiplex cinema to purchase one of those advertisements that is shown before the feature. It doesn't have to be fancy or dynamic, just a typical "business card" type ad -- only the business at hand is to seek your beloved's betrothal. Warning: Make sure she is focused on the screen and not on you. Don't want her to miss it. Also, schedule it for a movie that neither one of you would hate to miss -- you'll probably want to beat a hasty retreat from the crowd.

Mystery Painting
-
Commission an artist friend to paint a portrait of your intended prominently displaying the engagement ring you have purchased for her. Present the framed portrait to her and when you are both oohing and aahing over it and she asks about the ring, spring the question and present the engagement token, which could be mounted behind the frame for easy access.
Write It in the Sky
-
Scour the Yellow Pages for a sky writer and commission the pilot to inscribe the proposal against a clear blue sky. Back it up by having the ring on hand and some celebratory beverage chilling. A picnic setting would work well; after lunch, lie back at a prearranged time, ostensibly cloud gazing, and wait for the excitement.
