Trellis Ideas for Jasmine

Trellis Ideas for Jasmine thumbnail
Jasmine grows easily on fences and trellises.

Jasminum is the botanical name for the jasmine family. These vining plants are a common addition to gardens primarily because they provide a heady, sweet scent that adds to any landscape. Pick them in full bloom to bring the scent indoors. Growing jasmine doesn't take a lot of work -- they'll rapidly sprawl over rock walls, up fences and over trellises where you initially plant. Because trellises add beauty to the garden, you can place them almost anywhere to enjoy the sight and fragrance of the flowers. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. The Lone Arch

    • A single arched trellis for jasmine to climb can be placed virtually anywhere in a garden where you want to create a point of interest. You can find pre-built arched trellises at many home and garden centers. Place one over a sidewalk or walkway going toward your home, or near an outbuilding. Another idea is to place several single arches in a line leading to a small gazebo, a dock, a small grotto or at either or both ends of a long foot bridge.

    Joined Trellises

    • Three-sided rectangular trellises are another option. Placing several of these side by side to connect them can create a tunnel-like feeling. The jasmine crawling up, over, around and through the trellis will keep it somewhat enclosed. Even when the blooms stop during winter, the evergreen leaves will remain. Setting a small bench or two small chairs and a bistro table within such a structure composed of wider trellises is akin to creating an outdoor room.

    Trellis With Fencing

    • Secure several fan-shaped trellises to previously existing fences framing your yard. Wooden fences work best for appearance, but the jasmine will climb most structures, including chicken wire and stones. Stand three to five fan trellises along a fence, spaced evenly, and plant the jasmine below each one. Train it to grow up the trellis and in a year or two the entire area will be completely filled in with vines.

    Trellised Entries

    • Entering your home through a trellised entryway adds a touch of charm. Place one or more arched trellises so you pass beneath them to walk into your house. Apartment dwellers can attach a fan trellis to an outside balcony, or along the sides of patios and entryways. This will add height interest as well as beauty, and can potentially create privacy or block unwanted views. Jasmine grown in large pots serves this idea well, but it's ideal if you have room on the ground for direct planting.
