How do I Store Leather Furniture in Freezing Cold Temperatures?

Faith McGee

Leather furniture can crack due to extreme freezing temperatures. While keeping furniture in a climate-controlled storage facility is always the optimal choice, you can take steps to protect the furniture in a storage area without heat. You should always store it in a way that protects the wooden framework.

Insure expensive leather furniture before storing for the winter.

Furniture piled into storage can cause unnecessary stress to its framework and cause breaks or warping.

Tip

Spot check both the soap and the moisturizer in a hard-to-see area to ensure that it does not create a stain on the leather.

Warning

Avoid using saddle soap on leather furniture, because it has a high pH balance that can harm the leather.

  1. Wipe off your leather furniture with a soft towel to remove dirt and dust. Fill a bucket with lukewarm water. Dip a sponge into the water and squeeze. Rub a bar of moisturizing soap over the sponge and wipe across the leather furniture in a circular fashion. Buff the leather with a dry soft rag.

  2. Pour 1/2 tsp. of leather moisturizer onto a rag. Rub your leather furniture with moisturizer and reapply when you run out. Moisturizing your leather furniture can help prevent cracking during freezing temperatures.

  3. Wrap sheets over your leather furniture. Make sure there are no areas showing underneath the sheet. Keep the sheet on the furniture by overlapping the sheet and taping it together.

  4. Place plastic on the floor of your storage facility. Plastic will act as a moisture barrier to protect your leather. You can also place your leather furniture on wooden pallets.

  5. Set your furniture in the storage facility. Avoid laying anything on top or allowing any other furniture to touch the leather. Pressure from other objects can damage the cushioning or the wooden frame. In addition, it can create a crease in the leather over time.
