Berets are easy to make fashion accessories

Double stitch or double crochet is a beginning crochet stitch. It is a versatile stitch that is easy to learn. Adding advanced techniques such as increasing stitches allows the beginning craftsman to create fashionable items like berets. Choose a sport weight yarn to create a beret that can be worn year-round. Use a heavy weight yarn to create a warm winter hat. Make several in different colors so you can have a beret to match every outfit. Try using fun fur or eyelash yarn to create a fuzzy beret suitable for the holidays.

  1. Learn Double Crochet

    • Learn and practice a double crochet stitch. With a length of chain stitches on the crochet hook, yarn over and put the hook through a stitch. Draw up a loop through the stitch and bring the hook back to where you started. Yarn over and pull through the two top loops on the hook. Yarn over again and pull through all of the loops on the hook, resulting in one loop remaining on the hook. You have created one double crochet stitch.

    Start the Beret

    • Attach yarn to the hook and make four chain stitches. Join the chain with a slip stitch in the last stitch to form a loop. Make six double crochet stitches in the loop. Mark the beginning double crochet stitch with a row marker. You will continue to move the marker to the beginning of each round.

    Make the Beret Body

    • Make two double crochet stitches in each of the previous stitches. Starting with the next round, make one double crochet in the next stitch then make two double crochet stitches in the next stitch, and repeat this step until you complete the round.

Over the next seven rounds, repeat this pattern by adding one double crochet stitch to the pattern before you make the two double crochet stitches. By round seven you should have a total of six double crochet stitches followed by two double crochet stitches. For the following rounds, make a double crochet stitch in each stitch until you have added two inches to the beret from round seven. Fasten off the yarn and weave the ends through the stitching with a darning needle.

    Make the Band

    • Attach yarn to the crochet hook and make four chain stitches. In the second stitch from the hook make a double crochet stitch. Continue making double crochet stitches until you get to the end of the row, then make one chain stitch and turn. Working in the back loops of the previous double crochet stitches, make one double crochet stitch in each stitch. Continue making rows on the band until it measures 21 inches long. Fasten off and weave in the ends with a large eye needle.

    Assemble the Beret

    • Thread the large eye needle with yarn and invisibly stitch the ends of the band together so that the ends lie flat. Weave the yarn in and out of the stitching, similar to the stitching on a baseball. Stitch the band to the beret in the same manner. Fasten off the yarn and weave all loose ends through the stitching to finish.
