What to Use for an Outdoor Bed
An outdoor bed gives your yard an elegant and upscale look. Classy spas and hotels use outdoor beds near the ocean or swimming pool to let guests lounge in comfort. Outdoor beds give you a place for relaxing and let you take advantage of any views in your yard. Use the right tools and materials that keep the bed in good condition for years to come. Bed Frame
-
The bed frame is one of the most important pieces of equipment needed for an outdoor bed. The easiest method involves purchasing a new or used bed frame and placing it outside. Look for a bed frame that has raised posts on all four corners or a canopy bed. You can also make your own from pieces of plywood. Use two larger pieces as the headboard and footboard. Attach 2-by-4-inch boards that hold the pieces together and use smaller slats across them to keep the bed from moving or sliding off the frame.
Mattress
-
Place a basic mattress on top of the bed frame that fits the dimensions of the bed. If you want a more comfortable mattress that supports your weight, then opt for a regular mattress like the one you sleep on every night. A futon mattress is a cheaper alternative, but may not feel as comfortable because it is not as thick as a traditional mattress. Make your own by cutting two pieces of fabric to the same dimensions as your bed frame. Fill the pieces with quilt batting and sew shut.

Waterproof Fabric
-
Avoid using any type of fabric on the outdoor bed that is not waterproof, water-resistant or designed for outdoor use. Traditional fabrics breakdown quickly, especially when exposed to rain or snow. The moisture causes fraying of the fabric, which ruins the sleek look of the bed. Cover the mattress with a waterproof or outdoor fabric, which does not break down in the same way. If you want a canopy on the bed, then cover the top with outdoor fabric as well.
Decorative Elements
-
A few decorative elements make the bed look more comfortable and relaxed. Make a few throw pillows from outdoor fabric and stuff with quilt batting or polyfill batting. You also have the option of recovering existing pillows with cases made from outdoor fabric. Consider adding a small throw blanket in a matching fabric color for curling up at night.
