Tips on Choosing a Plus Size Wedding Dress
Finding the right wedding dress makes a bride feel beautiful, celebratory and youthful -- in short, like a bride. If you are a plus-sized bride, it may seem as though your gown options are limited in wedding boutiques. However, the key is to know the type of dress to look for when you begin shopping. After all, you want a dress that accentuates your alluring curves rather than hiding them behind yards of fabric. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Know Your Body Shape
-
Not all bodies are shaped the same way. Therefore, it is useful to know your body type as well as the areas with which you feel uncomfortable. For instance, if your shoulders and hips are evenly balanced and your waist is well-defined, you have an hourglass figure. Pear shapes have wider hips than shoulders, while triangle-shaped bodies have wider shoulders than hips. Apple figures are voluptuous with full breasts and hips as well as a bit of a tummy.
Avoid Too Much Detailing
-
Avoid gowns with heavy beading, appliques or embroidery on the waistline or hips, as these styles can make you look wider. Instead, opt for gowns with detailing around the neckline or hem. Additionally, try on gowns with fitted, ball gown-style bodices, side ruching or crossover waistlines, as these can work to visually cinch the waist and draw the eye upward. Finish off the look with a full skirt to make the waist look smaller.
-
Try a V-Neck Gown
-
If your waistline or hips make you self-conscious, draw the eye to your face with a v-neck gown. Choosing a gown of this style with wide straps can also work to visually narrow shoulders. However, if your shoulders and back are points of pride, consider wearing a halter dress to show off your assets. Like v-neck gowns, halter dresses draw the eye upward and balance the top and bottom halves of your body.
Elongate With Floor-Length Gowns
-
Lengthen your silhouette with a floor-sweeping gown. Long gowns will not visually shorten you in the way that a tea-length dress can do. Additionally, it will not make you appear top-heavy, which some short gowns do. To further elongate your lines, wear heels and purchase a gown that reaches the floor when you wear them. If you wish, you can seek out lengthening lines within your gown, such as princess seams and A-line tailoring.
