Funny Ways to Leave Your Wedding

Funny exits are ideal for brides and grooms with a jokester personality.

The bride and groom often follow certain customs for leaving their wedding. Traditionally, the bride and groom exit their wedding ceremony holding hands or with their arms locked, as guests throw rice or bird seed. They exit the reception with the toss of the bride’s bouquet. However, some brides and grooms opt for a non-traditional way to exit the ceremony or reception. If you want to send your guests home in smiles, use humor to leave your wedding.

  1. Recessional Song

    • Play a funny exit or recessional song. Whether leaving the church or the reception, play a corny or humorous song to make your guests laugh. For instance, play the "Macarena" by Los Del Rio, the “Hokey Pokey” by Ray Anthony or “Please Don’t Talk About Me When I’m Gone” by Louis Armstrong. Another option is to play “See You Later Alligator” by Bill Hailey & His Comets. Choreograph or practice dance steps to the song before the wedding day, so that you and your partner perform in sync.

    Shower the Guests

    • Upset tradition by throwing bird seed, rice or confetti at your guests as you leave the church. Have guests line up outside the church in anticipation of your exit. Have a member of the wedding party advise them that the rice or seed is about to be distributed. Then, exit the church with your spouse and surprise them with a shower. Alternatively, spray them with silly string. The string does not stain, so it will not ruin guest’s clothing.

    Reverse Dress

    • Leave your reception dressed as your new spouse. A funny way to exit is to have the bride and groom switch clothing or, at least, to make it appear so. Arrange a black tux for the bride and a white dress and veil for the groom. Shortly before the time of exit, sneak off to the bathroom to adorn these garments. Once dressed, take one last walk around the reception hall and wave to all the guests.

    Costume

    • Humor your guests by exiting your reception in costume. With your new spouse, dress up as a famous couple, such as John and Jackie Kennedy, Barack and Michelle Obama, Lucy and Ricky Ricardo, Fred and Wilma Flinstone, or John Lennon and Yoko Ono. To ensure guests appreciate the costume, wear a rubber mask, if available, for your character. Lock arms with your spouse and wave to all of the guests in persona.
