Sewing vs. Quilting

Sewing techniques are used in quilting, although with some modifications.

Sewing and quilting are two of the oldest crafts in the world. Sometimes, both crafts are interchanged because of the similarities on how they are executed and the materials they use. Although sewing is a fundamental process involved in quilting, both crafts have its own elements, tools and machines.

  1. Definitions

    • Sewing is the process of stitching objects together using a needle and thread. Although most commonly associated with clothing, it is also used in an array of arts and crafts including quilting. On the other hand, quilting is a more specific sewing method done to stitch two or more layers of fabrics, usually in decorative patterns, producing a thicker and warmer material.

    Elements

    • One of the most important differences between sewing and quilting is the seam allowance -- the space between the stitching and the raw, cut edge of the fabric. In sewing, the standard seam allowance is 5/8 inch, whereas 1/4 inch is the quilting standard.
A variety of stitches are used in sewing, ranging from the basic running stitch to the more elaborate chain stitch with looped stitches forming a chain-like pattern. In quilting, quick piecing techniques are important to learn, since they enable quilters to sew together blocks of quilt fabrics faster and easier.

    Tools and Machines

    • Sewing and quilting use several similar tools -- scissors, pins and needles, sewing machine, iron and ironing board. A major tool uniquely used in quilting is the rotary cutter, which looks like a pizza cutter because of its handle and rotating circulating blade. Sewing and quilting can both be done by hand or a sewing machine; however, quilting can also be done by a longarm quilting system. A typical system usually consists of a sewing machine, a long working table, several rollers where fabric layers are placed and a metal frame. Some brands have software features specifically designed to allow quilters to make larger quilts at a fraction of time it takes when using a sewing machine.

    Fabrics

    • In quilting, 100 percent cotton is preferred for the quilt face and back. Synthetic fibers like polyester are more likely to pucker if they are sewn together. Although 100 percent cotton is used for first time sewing projects, different fabrics can be used in sewing, depending on the desired output.
