Scissor Ladybug Crafts

There are about 5,000 different varieties of ladybugs.

Ladybugs inspire craft ideas because of their round, colorful spotted appearance. With a little cutting and pasting, you can put together adorable ladybug projects. Whether you are looking for a rainy-day activity to work on with your children, or you are an elementary school teacher creating a colorful bulletin board for Parent Night, a ladybug theme works well. All you really need are scissors, paper, glue and a lot of imagination.

  1. Ladybug Paper Plate Craft

    • Paint a small paper plate black. Cut the center out of another small paper plate and paint it black. Cut a third paper plate in half and paint both halves red. Dip your paintbrush into black paint and randomly dot both halves of the red plate in black paint. When the paint is dry, glue an edge of the small black circle (ladybug's head) to the underside of the black plate (ladybug's body). Glue the black dotted "wings" onto the lady bug so they meet at the top and spread apart in a pie-sized triangle to expose the ladybug's body. Cut 3-by-1/2-inch legs made from black construction paper, and glue them to the underside of the ladybug. Fold the legs like a fan to crinkle them. Add eyes (from the craft store) and a smiling red mouth.

    Ladybug Crown

    • Cut a 2-foot by 4-inch strip of red construction paper. Trace eight circles onto black construction paper, using baby food lids; draw hearts about 3 inches long on black construction paper, and cut out the circles and hearts. Wind a black or white pipe cleaner around a pencil to make the ladybug's antenna. Repeat with another pipe cleaner. Tape or glue a heart to the top of a pipe cleaner. Attach a heart to the other side of a pipe cleaner (the back side of the other heart). Glue the black dots randomly onto the red strip. Fit the red, dotted strip around the head and tape it together. Tape pipe cleaners onto the back portion of the red, polka-dotted strip as the antennae.

    Ladybug Wreath

    • On black construction paper, trace circles 3 inches in diameter. Trace an equal number of circles 3 inches in diameter on red construction paper. Trace dots 1/8 inch in diameter on black construction paper. Cut out all the tracings and arrange in categories. Cut red circles in half. Glue the red "wings" onto black circles with the top points together, and spread to show a pie-sized portion of the black body of the ladybug. Glue black dots on the red wings. Cut 2-inch pieces from a black pipe cleaner and tape to the underside of top of ladybug. Glue with hot glue onto a Styrofoam wreath. Cover the entire wreath with overlapping ladybugs. Tie piece of black or read yarn in a slipknot around top of wreath. Hang it on a wall or front door.

    Ladybug Valentines

    • Draw a ladybug's head and body on a piece of thin cardboard to use as template. Dimensions from head to tail should be 4 inches. The bug's body should be 3 inches in diameter. Trace this onto black scrapbook paper and cut it out. Fold red scrapbook paper in half and cut a heart. The furthest point of the heart should be 2 inches across (radius). Unfold the heart and draw a black line down the fold. Glue the red heart "wings" onto the black body portion of the ladybug. Draw black hearts on the wings and fill them in. Cut black pipe cleaner to 2 inches and glue on the underside of the head as antennae. Write a message in glowing gel pen or white ink on the underside of the ladybug.
