Many people toss out recyclable materials that can be reused to create many different crafts. One such craft is a globe created from old newspapers and magazines. When students make their own handmade globes from these materials, it not only teaches them about geography, but educates them about reducing, reusing and recycling waste in order to protect the environment. Everything needed to create a recycled globe can be found in your recycling bin and pantry.
Step 1
Blow up a balloon and tie the end. The larger you blow up the balloon, the larger your globe will be.

Cut strips of newspaper into pieces that are at least 2 inches in width and around 5 inches in length. In a bowl, mix together three cups of flour with one cup of water. Dip the strips of newspaper into the flour mixture, then drape them onto the balloon. Cover the entire balloon, leaving out the tied end. Add more and more layers until the balloon has around four layers. Let the mixture dry completely, then pop the balloon inside with a pin.
Step 3
Decide on which colors you want to add to the recycled globe, such as blue for the water and green and brown for the landforms. Collect a few magazines, and cut pieces out of the magazines that contain the colors you require for your globe. Organize the colors into stacks of similar colors. Using craft glue, paste the colors around your globe to symbolize areas of water and land. Let the globe dry completely before displaying it.
