Cut out photos of monkeys and make a collage.

Baboons, macaques and capuchins all belong to the primate order and are types of monkeys. The size and facial features of monkeys can vary greatly between species as can the environments they are found in -- from treetops to savannas. These cute, long-tailed animals fascinate many children, which makes them a great inspiration for craft projects.

  1. Bendable Monkeys

    • Create bendable monkeys that can be played with long after the craft has been completed. Glue two pompoms together using tacky glue to make the monkey’s head and body. Glue pipe cleaners to the body to form the arms, legs and tail. Use small pieces of felt, craft foam or tiny pompoms for the creature’s ears. Affix wiggly eyes or tiny circles of black felt or craft foam for the eyes and a tiny pompom for the nose. Create monochromatic monkeys or multicolored ones by mixing and matching the colors of the pompoms and pipe cleaners.

    Templates

    • Monkey templates make easy crafts which are great for young children still working on their fine-motor skills. You can find templates in books sold by craft stores or online retailers, or from free online sources. For example, make a toilet paper roll monkey by cutting out the head, body, limbs and tail from the template and gluing them onto the paper roll (See Resources). Or construct a monkey mask by cutting out a mask template and tying a piece of elastic to each side so it’s wearable. Personalize monkey template crafts by adding embellishments such as glitter, wiggly eggs or pompoms to the craft.

    Waving Monkey

    • Create a monkey puppet that waves. Cut the monkey’s head, body, arms, legs and tail out of brown construction paper. Draw a face onto the monkey’s head using crayons, markers or paints. Connect the paper pieces by gluing or taping short sections of string to the back of the pieces. For example, one piece of string will be taped to the head and the body. Attach longer pieces of string to the head and one arm. Hold the head string still and pull on the arm string to make the monkey’s arm wave.

    Plate Monkey

    • Construct a monkey out of paper plates. Paint one small and one large paper plate brown. Glue the small plate to the top of the large plate so they are slightly overlapping. With markers or paint draw a face onto the smaller paper plate. You can also use wiggly eyes, pompoms or yarn to make the face. Attach two round circles made out of construction paper to the sides of the small plate for the ears. Cut arms, legs and a tail out of brown construction paper and tape or glue them to the body.
