Games for Quilt Guilds
Successful games for quilt guilds are based on the common interests about which quilters are most passionate -- fabric, fabric, fabric and still more fabric. Lively games can build on this shared interest and engage guild members in fresh opportunities for fun and conversation. A mix of active games such as quilt-themed relay races combined with brain teasers and word games will ensure that everyone has an enjoyable time and gets to know each other better.

Living Quilt Block
-
Stick masking tape to the floor to form a square divided into nine blocks, three in each row. Each side of the square should be approximately 6 feet long. Give each guild member a large piece of colored paper cut into either a square or a right triangle. The moderator calls out the name of a quilt pattern such as Nine Patch, Ohio Star or Shoo Fly, and guild members move to the appropriate squares to create the pattern with their game pieces. This game is a mixer, meant to get members up and moving. Unless the guild is large, there may not be enough members for multiple teams to compete on times.
Present Grab Bag
-
Each guild member brings a small wrapped present and puts it in a common pool. Each participant draws a number. The person with No. 1 selects a package and unwraps it. Participant No. 2 can either steal the first person's present or select a new one. The excitement builds as guild members steal each other's presents. Fabric fat quarters are a great choice for this game. Offbeat or vintage quilting items are a sure fire way to encourage a frenzy of stealing.

Quilto
-
Quilt block names are a natural to adapt to crossword puzzles, anagrams and jumbles. Quilt notions such as thimbles, scissors and quilting hoops lend themselves to word games as well. Create bingo cards altered to say Quilto for a fast-paced game. If preparation time is limited, give guild members sheets of paper and pencils, and have them list as many block patterns as they can think of. Time the game, with a set of fabric fat quarters as a prize for the winner.
Mystery Quilt
-
Divide the guild into teams of two or three members. Let each team select a grab bag of mystery fabrics. Each bag should contain at least one or more phenomenally ugly fabrics. Set the timer and let each team create a block of their choosing with the fabrics they selected. Teams may swap fabrics with each other. Prizes are awarded for most creative and least ugly blocks.
