Several scholarships are available to help children who have lost a parent.

Several scholarship opportunities exist for children of deceased fathers. Most scholarship opportunities of this type are also available to children of deceased mothers. They may be general scholarships for children who have lost a parent, or they may be specific to the reason the parent died.

  1. General

    • Some scholarships don’t restrict eligibility to children of parents who died of a specific cause. The LIFE Lessons Scholarship Program (lifehappens.org) offers college scholarships for students who have lost a parent. Applicants must submit a video of three minutes or less or an essay with a maximum length of 500 words that describes how the loss of their parents impacted their plans for college, their emotional health and families’ financial states. Applications are accepted once per year in February and March. Scholarships range in worth from $1,000 to $10,000.

    Injured

    • Some organizations provide scholarships to children of parents who died because of a workplace injury. One such organization is Kids’ Chance (kidschance.org). It has affiliate organizations in states across the country and provides scholarships to children whose parents died because of a work-related accident. Scholarships are provided through state Kids’ Chance organizations.

    September 11

    • A number of scholarships are available to children of the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. One organization providing scholarships to these children is Families of Freedom (familiesoffreedom.org), which provided $74 million in scholarship funds to 1,876 recipients from 2001 through the 2011 to 2012 school year.

    Military Service

    • Many military service societies offer scholarships to children of soldiers who have passed away. The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (nmcrs.org), for example, offers scholarships to children of deceased Marines and Seamen. The Gold Star Scholarship Program is specifically for children whose parents died in the missile attack on the “USS Stark” and in the terrorist attack on the “USS Cole.”

    Medical

    • Scholarships are available to children of parents who died from a medical condition or disease. Parents of Kids with Infectious Diseases (pkids.org) is an organization that provides scholarships to children of parents who have died from Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C or AIDS. Applicants must provide significant financial documentation, including pay stubs, tax returns, copies of utility bills and a tuition bill.
