Background
-
The QuickCam line was actually not a creation of Logitech, but Connectix Corp., a computer software and hardware company established in 1988. The company came up with the QuickCam for Apple Inc.'s Macintosh computers in 1994; it holds the distinction of being the first-ever webcam. In 1998, however, it bequeathed the brand to Logitech, then closed its doors five years later.
Release and Pricing
-
The Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 made its debut in 2005. By then, the QuickCam brand was compatible with Windows-based personal computers and Macs. Also, the interface used to connect the camera to the computer had graduated from a 25-pin RS-232 serial port to a USB one. The manufacturer's suggested retail price was $80 at time of publication.

The Logitech Pro 5000 was ideally designed for compatibility with the Microsoft Windows 2000 or Windows XP operating system.

-
At the time of publication, Logitech no longer makes and sells the QuickCam Pro 5000. With a resolution used by standard-definition television, the entire QuickCam Pro brand has been supplanted by the high-definition Logitech HD Pro lineup.
