Purchase costume jewelry for guests to drape themselves in.

Send your guests to a world of extravagance and coy flirtation. A Moulin Rouge-themed party is sure to incite the senses and fill the room with energy. Include ideas from the 2001 movie as well as the original establishment in France. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Decor

    • Set the stage with Moulin Rouge inspired decor. Theme colors include pink, red, black, silver and gold. Create romantic "stage" lighting with Christmas lights around the floor of the room. Accent tables with gold elephant figurines, top hats and tulle. Set out the guests glasses and add a feather in each. Place lit tea candles in transparent red holders and cover the couch with red velvet throw pillows.

    Absinthe

    • Purchase absinthe online or make your own. Absinthe in the United States is legal to sell as long as the thujone or wormwood extract has been removed. For a more cost effective alternative, make your own absinthe-style drink from mint vodka. Infuse the vodka for a two or three days with star anise to create the licorice flavor. Add a few drops of green food coloring and pour inside a vintage glass bottle. Place a small bowl of sugar cubes nearby so guests may replicate the traditional style of drinking absinthe.

    Attire

    • Encourage guests to wear themed attire. Women can dress in full Can-Can costume or a lush skirt, boa, corset and romantic makeup. Men may wear vests or black button down shirts and slacks. Include a monocle or mustache for a fun touch. As the host, go extravagant: wear a silk red dress such as the one Satine wore in the movie or dress up as the mischievous Green Fairy with a green sequined leotard and tulle skirt.

    Food

    • Stick to the theme of decadence with rich finger food. Make mini-crepes filled with fruit and whipped creme. Roast almonds and walnuts and sprinkle with ground cinnamon. Steam small potatoes and mix with butter, salt and parsley. For desserts, try chocolate mousse, french vanilla ice cream or creme de menthe brownies.
