Make your wedding memorable with a bonfire.

A bonfire wedding can be a special way to celebrate your big day memorably. Depending on where you host the bonfire, you'll have to take certain factors into account. For instance, while you can certainly have a daytime bonfire, an after-dark bonfire will heighten the mood of the celebration. In the case of a dusk or nighttime bonfire, you'll have to plan things like lighting accordingly.

  1. Music

    • If you plan to host your wedding or wedding reception around an intimate bonfire, you'll have to plan your music accordingly. The outdoor setting won't be impossible to conquer technologically, but it would be easier to skip the hassle of dealing with extension cords and go ultra-simple with your music. Consider hiring a string quartet or single acoustic guitarist to provide the music for your celebration to avoid the pains that are sure to come with a full band. Another option is to use a portable stereo system that runs on batteries instead of electricity.

    Lighting

    • Depending on the time of day, you might or might not have to worry about the lighting of your wedding celebration. Assuming you hold your wedding at dusk or after dark, you'll want to provide lighting to ensure your guests' safety as they move around the outdoor space. Use lighting that complements the light of the bonfire. This could include votive-style candles to light the walkways around the space, tiki torches or hanging paper lanterns and string lights. The latter will be a bit trickier to work with as they often require something to hold them up and a source of electricity, but they would certainly suit the mood of a bonfire for lighting.

    Menu

    • Update classic campfire treats for a playful way to pay homage to the bonfire celebration. For instance, you could serve a variety of grilled meats and vegetables as your main course. Kebabs are an interesting spin on the traditional idea of roasting a hot dog over an open fire, or you could roast a large piece of meat right there in the fire pit for a wow factor. For dessert, you can't go wrong with DIY roasting marshmallows, which could be capped off with graham crackers and chocolate to make s'mores.

    Activities

    • For a fun take on singing around the campfire, hold a couple-inspired karaoke session, asking each guest to perform from a list of the bride and groom's favorite songs. You could also do a less scary version of campfire ghost stories by instead having each guest go around in a circle to tell their favorite memory of the newlywed couple. For a similar idea, you could have the guests offer their best words of advice to have a successful, happy marriage.
