Make your own lions for a Bible skit.

In the book of Daniel, a story is told of Daniel, a faithful God-fearing man, who faced ferocious lions in the den when he disobeyed the king's command. Church groups and Christian schools perform skits based on the story. Create your own lion's mask for a Daniel in the Lion's Den skit, or the masks for fun. Follow these easy directions for simple but diverse masks.

  1. Plaster Craft

    • Ask your model to lay flat on a table and cover his face with petroleum jelly. Include the hair around his face. Soak strips of plaster craft in water and layer them on the model's face. Avoid the eyes and the mouth. Slowly add new strips, building layers at least three or four strips deep. Smooth the plaster with a wet finger. Build up the nose with more layers, forming a square lion's nose. After three to five minutes, gently lift the mask from the model's face. Add strips of the plaster craft around the outside of the face. Curl it and hold it in place with a straight pen until it is hard enough to hold the curved form. Remove the pin. Allow the mask to dry for two days. Paint it a yellowish brown. Poke holes on the sides of the mask and add an elastic string.

    Cardboard Mask

    • Cut a large round cardboard shape and cut a hole in the center to match the actor's face. Use yellow strips of construction paper and cover the cardboard. Add a mane with paper mache; make the paper mache by mixing flour and water together together, adding flour until it is thinner than glue. Continue adding flour if it is too thin or water if it is too thick. (Reference One) Dip the paper into the mixture and add it to the board. Let it dry between every other layer. Add curls by curving the paper as you add it to the mask.

    Paper Plate Mask

    • Cut a paper plate in half. Set one half aside for another project. Cut a V-shaped notch on the flat edge on the plate. The cut should be in the center of the plate. Hold the paper plate up to the face of the one who will wear it. Mark where the eyes are located. Lay the mask on a cutting board and cut out long, narrow eyes. Punch holes, 1-inch apart around the curved edge of the plate. Then, paint the plate yellow. After the paint dries, Cut 6-inch strands of yellow yarn. Fold the strands in half and put the folded end through the holes. Thread the ends through the loop and pull it firmly. Tie a knot. When all of the holes are full of yarn, punch two more holes in the mask; place one on each side. Tie elastic through one side. Place the mask back on the model. Stretch the elastic so it will fit and hold the mask in place. Cut the elastic and tie the other end through the second hole.

    Paper Mask

    • Locate a mask on the Internet like the one found in the resource section. Color the mask and cut it out. Place glue on the mask. Smooth it out and place the mask on a piece of thin tag board. Once it dries, cut out the mask. Then, punch one hole on each side, near the ears. Add string and the mask is ready to go. To make it a little fancier, punch holes around the mask and tie 4-inch long pieces of yellow yarn to each hole.
