Some simple decorating techniques will add visual interest to standard stairs.

The stairwell is often overlooked as part of a home's décor, despite being among the most used features within the home. Instead of ignoring this structure, include it in the decorating scheme by dressing up the treads and risers. Breathe new life into an old staircase in one of many ways that vary in cost and difficulty. If the stairs are structurally sound, a cosmetic touch-up will help polish the look and style of the home. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Add a Runner

    • A runner is a long, narrow piece of carpet ideal for use on the stairs. Since the treads of a stairway tend to wear out quickly because of high foot traffic, this is a fairly inexpensive way to keep flooring in good condition longer and reduce the risk of slipping on tile or wood stairs. The fabric will add a bit of texture and color to a plain staircase and the right pattern or color will aid in creating a harmonious feel with the styles of nearby rooms.

    Paint

    • As with walls and other parts of the home, a coat of paint is an inexpensive way to create a whole new look for a staircase. Paint the riser and tread the same color for a modern design, or the riser white with a wood toned tread for a more traditional appearance. A modern alternative is to select two colors, one for the tread and one for the riser. Choose different shades from the same family -- a bold color and a neutral, or two contrasting hues. Multiple tones will add extra visual interest to the stairwell.

    Stenciling

    • Stenciling is a way to punch up a plain stairwell by adding color, texture and pattern to the design. There is an almost unlimited selection of sizes, styles and motifs to fit just about any home decorating style. Most home improvement or decorating stores and a number of online sites offer stencils for painting onto existing risers or treads and will feature primarily geometric patterns and abstract designs. An alternative option, which gives a more customized look to the design, is to purchase prestenciled flooring for use on the stairs. This option typically has a higher price tag and requires removing and replacing existing flooring.

    Stamping

    • Rubber stamps will produce a look similar to a stencil, but have a wider selection of shapes and designs from which to choose. For the main staircase, keep it simple with a floral or leaf pattern, some pawprints or another design which fits the family and the décor. For staircases which lead to basement or attic playrooms, select something a bit more kid friendly -- insects, dinosaurs, flowers, bees and butterflies each in bright colors are ideal. Stamping is an easier method than stenciling, ideal for getting younger family members involved.
