Scholarships for Granddaughters of Veterans

Although there are a variety of scholarship programs open to the dependents of veterans, the majority of these programs are limited to the direct biological children of former military personnel. However, if you are the granddaughter of a U.S. veteran, there are a few national scholarship programs for which you are eligible to compete.

  1. American Legion Auxiliary

    • The American Legion Auxiliary offers two annual scholarship programs available to the granddaughters of U.S. veterans. The Children of Warriors National Presidents' Scholarship is awarded in amounts of between $1,500 and $2,500. The Samsung American Legion Scholarship is valued at approximately $3,000 and is available to the granddaughters of veterans of the Korean War who have also attended the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State, a program designed to teach young women about responsible citizenship between their junior and senior high school years. Both scholarships are limited to undergraduate students.

    AMVETS

    • The organization American Veterans (AMVETS) offers several scholarships and tuition discounts to the grandchildren of American servicemen. For example, six $4,000 scholarships for undergraduate children and grandchildren of veterans are awarded each year. In addition, AMVETS offers tuition discounts to several online universities, including the University of Phoenix and Kaplan University. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need and academic record. Applications are available on the AMVETS website (amvets.org).

    Vietnam Veterans of America

    • Granddaughters of Vietnam veterans -- including veterans killed or missing in action -- may be eligible for scholarship support through the Mike Nash Memorial Scholarship Fund, available through the Vietnam Veterans of America. Both full-time and half-time undergraduate students are eligible. Applications are available from the Vietnam Veterans of America website (vva.org) and must be submitted by the annual application deadline of May 31.

Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America

    • The Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America offer several scholarships to granddaughters of Jewish veterans. The JWV Grant is valued at $500, the Louis S. Silvey Grant is awarded in the amount of $750 and the Bernard Rotberg Memorial Scholarship Fund is available in the amount of $1,000. To be eligible, your veteran grandparent must be a member of the JWV, and you must be within the top 25 percent of your high school class. Applications may be obtained by contacting the JWV national headquarters.
