VBS Christian Crafts on Abraham Putting God First
According to the Biblical Old Testament, Abraham was too old to have any children when he miraculously had a boy named Isaac. Soon after, God ordered Abraham to sacrifice his son. When Abraham showed that he was willing to obey, God commanded him to sacrifice a bull instead and declared that Isaac would become the father of many nations. Since that time, many Christians have held up Abraham as an example of what it means to put God first. There are a wide variety of activities to teach children that message in programs like Vacation Bible School.

Picture Frame Craft
-
One craft project that is appropriate for young children is to make a picture frame depicting God's promise to Abraham. Give the children a piece of construction paper on which they can draw and color pictures of Abraham, his wife, Sarah, and their son, Isaac. Place the construction paper inside the picture frame, which can be decorated with stickers or drawings of stars. Talk to the children about how God promised to make Abraham's descendents "as numerous as the stars in the sky" and that God carried out this promise because Abraham put God first in his life.
Abraham's Family Tree
-
This project is appropriate for children from grades 3 to 8. Make a "family tree" for Abraham and his descendents, showing Abraham as the roots, his son Isaac and grandson Jacob as the trunk, and Jacob's 12 sons as the branches representing the 12 tribes of Israel. For younger children, prepare the tree in advance; for older children, have them make it themselves. Talk to the children about how Abraham's willingness to put God first led God to promise that Abraham would be the father of many nations. Use the tree to show how God fulfilled that promise.

Memory Verses
-
Encourage children to learn Bible verses that talk about how Abraham put God first. A few possibilities are Genesis 26:4-5 and, to show students how the New Testament talks about Abraham, Galatians 3:8-9. Have children write out these verses on construction paper and to illustrate the paper with pictures of what they think it means to put God first. This activity will help them learn the verses and to think about how they can copy Abraham in their own lives.
Lamb of God
-
Talk to children about how Abraham put God first by offering his son to God, then explain how in the New Testament, God offered his own son to us. Jesus is called the lamb of God because he was a sacrifice to save everyone. Ask children to think about "lambs" in their own lives -- things that they should give up to God but haven't yet. Instruct them to each make a drawing of a lamb and to write something on it that they will give up for God.
