Avocados are the fruit of a tree that originated in Mexico and has been cultivated in California and elsewhere for many years as a food product. The avocado is a round or egg-shaped fruit with a tough skin and a creamy green pulp and one large seed inside that is often used in Mexican cuisine. The avocado growing season lasts year round. But if you are looking for an avocado that you can harvest in the late fall of the year, you are limited to a few varieties, but they are all high quality options. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Bacon

    • The Bacon avocado is a fruit with a dark green skin and a light taste. It is easily peeled and is generally considered to be one of the better-tasting varieties. It is a medium-sized avocado, usually between 6 and 12 oz. The skin is smooth, unlike many other types, and it has a yellow to green flesh. The Bacon avocado is available for harvest from late fall all the way through to early spring.

    Fuerte

    • The Fuerte avocado is a medium- to large-sized fruit that is shaped like a pear and weighs as much as 16 oz. The green speckled skin of the Fuerte avocado is smooth and easy to peel. The flesh inside this variety is thick and yellow with high oil content. It is among the richest and creamiest avocados and was the leading variety in grocery stores prior to the rise of the Hass. According to the Slow Food USA website, the Fuerte avocado has a distinct flavor that includes hints of hazelnuts and a lemony finish. It is available for harvest from late fall through spring.

    Hass

    • The most popular of the California avocados is the Hass. The fruit is named after postman Rudolph Hass of California, who developed the cultivar in 1935. The Hass is a thick- and bumpy-skinned avocado with a small seed that is oval-shaped and weighs between 5 and 12 oz. It has pale green and very creamy flesh and is a favorite for its flavor. It is also easily identifiable when ripe because the variety turns dark purple to black when it is ready to be eaten. It is available in late fall as well as any other time that avocados will grow. It is truly a year-round fruit.

    Reed

    • The Reed avocado is a summer and fall variety that, unlike other fall varieties, is round instead of oblong. It has a smooth green skin that slips easily off the flesh, and the flesh is considered very tasty by avocado lovers, although it does behave differently when ripe. Most avocados get quite soft when ripe, but the flesh of the Reed avocado will remain firm even when it gets very ripe. This quality makes it excellent for use on sandwiches and salads, but it is not ideal for making guacamole.
