Examples of a Stock Portfolio
When you invest in the stock market, you have a number of ways to diversify your holdings and build a balanced portfolio. Putting all of your money into a single stock can be extremely risky, so most stock market investors choose to build a portfolio consisting of many different companies. As an investor, you have a number of ways to build that portfolio and meet your financial needs.
-
Sector Investing
-
If you have a specific expertise or experience in a specific sector, you might want to build a portfolio around that sector. For instance, if you work as a database administrator, you might want to focus your stock investing on the companies you feel build the best database software. If you are an expert in the pharmaceutical field, building a portfolio of biotech and drug maker stocks can allow you to profit from that expertise.
Multinational Companies
-
Investing outside of your home country is a way to diversify your holdings further and spread out your risk around the world. If you want to take advantage of international growth, building a portfolio of multinational and international stocks is a good way to do it. You can choose companies that are based in your home country but do a substantial portion of their business overseas, or you can choose companies that are foreign owned.

Total Stock Market Portfolio
-
Investing in the total stock market allows you to capture the return of the stock market while at the same time diversifying your investment portfolio. The easiest way to build a total stock market portfolio is with a mutual fund or an exchange traded fund. A number of mutual fund companies offer funds that invest in the total market, and you can also buy the ETF that trades under ticker symbol VTI to purchase the entire market as a single security.
Income Portfolio
-
If you need to derive current income from your investments, you can put your money into a portfolio consisting of stocks that pay a high dividend. If you have a brokerage account, you can use the stock screening tools provided by the firm to screen the thousands of stocks on the market for minimum dividend yield, dividend growth, earnings growth and other factors. Once you have that dividend portfolio in place, you can use the money it produces to supplement your income or give you extra spending cash.
