Card Ideas Using Embossing
Embossing is a technique that creates a raised image on paper. There are two common ways to do embossing for cards -- dry embossing and heat embossing. To dry emboss, place card stock over a stencil and use a stylus to trace the image, leaving an indentation in the paper. While traditional stencils are used on top of paper, an embossing stencil goes under the paper so the stylus can press the paper down into the opening, creating the relief effect. It works best if you put the stencil and paper over a window or light box so you can see the design. For heat embossing, stamp an image with embossing ink, cover it with embossing powder and use a heat gun to emboss the image.

Frames
-
Emboss and cut out oval and rectangular frames to place around photos or graphics. Create a collage of small photographs in embossed frames of different sizes and shapes on the front of a card or place a different medium inside each frame -- a stamped image, text and something three-dimensional such as a button, pressed flower or tiny trinket.
Monogram
-
A monogram is a formal element that will give your card a more official and serious tone. Use script lettering stamps or stencils to form an overlapping image of two or three letters, usually your initials, and emboss the lettering. A monogrammed card is elegant and most suitable for invitations to formal occasions and thank you notes. It's probably too formal for most birthday cards or casual invitations.

Dimensional Accents
-
Embossing gives your cards more texture but if you want them to pop even more, put an embossed shape on with adhesive foam. This raises the image up and gives it a playful, three-dimensional element. This technique adds a fun character to your card, which makes it useful for party invitations, birthday cards and summer-themed cards.
Keepsakes
-
Make a baby announcement with an embossed hand print or footprint of the new arrival. Use light blue or light pink embossing powder to indicate the gender. Emboss it into the front of the announcement or emboss it on a separate piece of paper and place it inside as an insert. Or cut out the embossed print and attach it to the card anywhere with adhesive.
