Traditional bouquets are lovely, but there are alternatives.

Pagan brides once carried garlands to ward off evil spirits that could attack on the wedding day. Victorian brides strongly believed in the language of flowers and would carry types that would symbolize their love for their husband and ensure a happy marriage. While society has evolved a bit since then, it is still common for brides to carry a fragrant bouquet of flowers down the aisle. The styles and colors have less to do with meaning and more with decor, so you can go ahead and try something a little different, if you want.

  1. Sparkling Lights

    • If you are having an evening wedding, consider making a bouquet out of battery operated strings of lights. Wrap the battery pack in ribbons that match your wedding colors and gather the strings so that the lights drape in sections six to nine inches long. Groupings of white lights create an ethereal glow, but there are many colors and styles from which to choose. Some brides also create a glow by carrying candles protected by wind guards.

    Origami Creations

    • Paper flowers hold their shape nicely and there are many types you can easily create. Make a full bouquet or just one large flower for each lady. Origami cranes are also a symbol of luck. Choose origami paper in your wedding colors and create cranes of various sizes. Using clear fishing line, place a bead at the base of the string. Thread the crane on and knot a few inches above. Continue the process until you have four or five cranes. Cup the smallest crane in your hands and let the rest dangle.

    Ribbons and Beads

    • Many crafty brides choose to make their bouquets out of easily accessed supplies. Bouquets of buttoned creations are trendy, as are creations made from various ribbons and beadwork. For a simple and elegant bouquet, place beads on crafting wire to create your flowers. Create an inexpensive beaded bouquet with cheaper beads or go all out with sterling silver and Swarovski crystals.

    Carried Items

    • If you are having a beach wedding, carrying a large shell is a simple and beautiful solution to the flower question, but many things may be carried. Consider your interests and the location of the wedding. A Catholic bride may choose a jeweled rosary or a superstitious bride may choose a horseshoe. Brides and attendants may choose to carry anything the bride wishes, such as an ornate fan or parasol.
