PhotoBooth & iChat Effects

Apple’s Mac OS X operating system comes with its own native instant messaging application, iChat, and Photo Booth for taking pictures or recording video. Both iChat and Photo Booth feature effects that you can apply to still images, video recordings and video chats. On top of default effects, you can also download extra effects from third-party developers.

  1. iSight Overview

    • ISight is the built-in webcam that comes with Mac computers and is automatically configured for iChat and Photo Booth. You can access iSight through Photo Booth, iChat, iMovie, QuickTime and other applications that record or send video. Unfortunately, as of the time of publication, all settings for iSight are automatic - including brightness, color, contrast and focus - and you cannot access them on your Mac.

    iChat Effects

    • The video effects available in iChat include Sepia, Black and White, Glow, Comic Book, Color Pencil, Thermal Camera, X-Ray and Pop Art. Face-altering effects include Bulge, Dent, Twirl, Squeeze, Mirror, Light Tunnel, Fish Eye and Stretch. Moving background effects include Clouds, Colored Dots, Earthrise, Eiffel Tower, Fish, Rollercoaster, Sunset and Yosemite. You can also drag any photo and drop it into an empty slot to create your own custom backdrop.

    Photo Booth Effects

    • Photo Booth offers the exact same effects as iChat, except you don't have to be connected to a video chat to use them. Photo Booth lets you take still photos and video recordings with effects. When you take a still photo, the effect freezes at the moment the photo is taken. To access effects, open Photo Booth and slide the indicator to choose between still photo or video recording mode. Click the "Effects" button just under the image on the left and then click an effect to apply it.

    Extra Effects and Settings

    • If you aren't satisfied with the existing effects in iChat and Photo Booth, third-party add-on MoreiChatEffects offers extra effects for free. You can download and install MoreiChatEffects, and a variety of new effects automatically appear in your Effects Window in both iChat and Photo Booth. On the same note, if you want to change the automatic settings on your iSight, third-party application iGlasses lets you adjust brightness, contrast, color, saturation and more.
