Crafts With Repurposed Wood

Old wood can be used in many new ways, including craft projects.

Rather than throw away broken or unused items, you can repurpose them to create a variety of other things. One type of material that takes well to repurposing is wood. There are many ways to build and create beautiful wooden crafts with old wood.

  1. Coasters

    • Use a broken branch with a 3- to 4-inch diameter to make beautiful seasonal coasters to use yourself or to give as gifts. Cut the branch into 1/2-inch slices and sand the flat sides to create smooth work surfaces. Stamp the slices with seasonally appropriate stamps such as flowers, snowmen or leaves and finish with a spray varnish to protect the surface from moisture.

    Child's Table

    • Give new life to a broken old table with some paint and a little work. This project is perfect for a small table with broken or uneven legs. Cut the table in half so it balances on just two legs. If you want the table lower so that it is easily reached by a child, cut the legs down. Sand and paint the table as desired. Attach the sawed end to the wall to create a cute table for kids to do their own craft projects or to play pretend.

    Photos

    • Give a wooden pallet a second chance by adorning it with photos. Sand the pallet fully, as the wood on these can be quite rough, and paint it in colors to complement the room. You can even paint the slats different colors for a brighter effect. Use wall putty to attach photos to the slats at varying angles. This craft project works best with smaller 36-by-36-inch pallets.

    Bird Nesting Box

    • This craft project does not require a lot of wood, so make it with wood scraps from pallets or old furniture. Use slats to build a deep box that is 8 inches high with box dimensions of 8 by 8 inches. Build a flat or arched roof over the box. Drill a large hole, approximately 2 inches in diameter, for the doorway. Drill a second hole through one side and out the other, and slide a dowel through to create a perch. To simplify the project, you can use an old wooden drawer from a desk or breakfront for the nesting box. Attach a hook to the back to hang it outside.
