Customize a top hat for all your patriotic holidays and parties.

Patriotic top hats are a fun craft to make with children during holidays. Build a black stovepipe hat when you are teaching your child about Abraham Lincoln. During Memorial Day or Independence Day, try new hat designs to show your support for the United States. Add stickers or stamps to the hat designs to customize them.

  1. Ribbon

    • Cut a rectangle out of red, white or blue poster board that is 7 inches wide and 1 inch longer than the circumference of your child’s head. Wrap the poster board around your child’s head to create a cylinder. Tape the paper so the cylinder stays secure. Trace the circle of the poster board on a second sheet of poster board. Draw a second circle around the first that is 4 inches outside the first line, and cut out the larger circle. Cut lines from the center of the circle to the small-circle line, so there are a bunch of triangles in the center. Bend the triangles into the bottom of the cylinder and tape them in place. Bend the outer circle so that it creates a brim. Add red, white and blue ribbons to the top and bottom of the hat for a festive look.

    Flags

    • Create a hat like you did in section 1, without the ribbons. Instead, tape flags to the outside of the hat, all the way around the top. You can draw or paint these flags on the hat if you do not have plastic or paper flags. If your flags are on sticks, they may be taped so they show above the top of the hat.

    Paint

    • Cut white poster board for your hat. Paint red stripes on the hat. Press star or flag shapes, such as cookie cutters, into paint and press them onto the poster board. Let your paint dry completely. Create your brim out of blue or red and secure it.

    Lincoln

    • In celebration of Presidents Day, you can make a stovepipe hat like Abraham Lincoln wore. Set a toilet paper tube on black construction paper and trace two circles. Draw a bigger circle around one of the small circles, 1 inch from the small circle line, then cut out the inside circle and along the outside edge of the bigger circle, so you have a rim. Draw a ½-inch-bigger circle around the second small circle and cut out the larger circle only. Cut lines from the outer edge to the inside circle line so you have ½-inch fringe on the second circle. Cut the toilet paper roll tube in half, and set the second circle on the top, with the drawing-side down. Pull down the fringe and glue it to the tube. Tape the rim on the bottom of the tube. Wrap the tube with black construction paper.
