How Is a Quilt Wrapped?
Large quilts are a challenge to wrap as a gift or for long-term storage. It is not always easy to find a box the perfect size. Without a box, gift wrap around a quilt can tear easily, and the soft, shifting bulk of the quilt makes it tricky to maneuver during the wrapping process. There are simple solutions to quilt wrapping challenges that present and preserve a large quilt beautifully.

Wrapping for Storage
-
For long-term storage, wrap large quilts in acid-free sheets. Use two sheets slightly larger than the quilt. Spread one sheet on the floor. Place the open quilt on top of the first sheet. Spread another sheet on top of the quilt, like a quilt sandwich. Keeping all three layers together, fold up the sheet-covered quilt and store. Do not store quilts in plastic boxes. Unfold and air out quilts every three to six months, then fold and store them again.
Gift Bags
-
When wrapping a quilt as a present, large gift bags offer a quick and simple solution. Try reusable fabric or plastic gift bags available from craft and party supply retailers. Attractive reusable laundry bags work well, too. Place the quilt in the gift bag. Tie the top of the bag closed with thick ribbon in complimentary colors and patterns. Complete the wrapping with a large gift tag tied or taped to the ribbon.

Blankets, Sheets and Throws
-
Create a gift set by wrapping a quilt inside other bed linens, making the wrap part of the present. Place the folded quilt in the center of a king-size fleece blanket. Pull the four corners of the blanket together over the quilt. Tie the blanket closed with heavy ribbon or colored string. Use flannel sheets or oversized throws as alternative quilt wrappings for a bedding gift set.
Using a Box
-
To keep a quilt as safe and beautiful as possible, use only new boxes for gift wrapping. Old boxes might have unnoticeable stains, staples or holes. Buy a new cardboard box from an office-supply store after first measuring the dimensions of the folded quilt. Use a plastic tub or bin only if the quilt is being shipped, to protect it from damage. Any tissue paper or quilt covering inside the box should be acid free.
