Handmade Ocean Themed Tissue Paper Decorations
As young children begin to learn about life in the ocean, art activities can support their learning. You can use, too, handmade art projects to decorate your classroom with an ocean theme. By using a few supplies, such as tissue paper, construction paper and glue, the decorations have a minimal cost and the students can demonstrate their artistic talents for everyone to see.

Wall Decor
-
Wall decor with an ocean theme is easily created in a number of ways. Using a construction-paper base, students can glue tissue paper shapes to the paper and create their own visions of the ocean to hang in the classroom. You can also provide the students with construction paper cut-outs and have the students apply tissue paper squares with glue to the cut-outs and attach the cut-outs to the wall with tape.
Windows
-
For this project you will need the little suction cup holders made for window art, available at most craft stores. You will also need clear contact paper and lots of tissue paper. Have your students work in groups to design on paper an ocean-themed picture. Then let them draw their shapes on tissue paper with a pencil and cut them out. Pull off the back of the contact paper, exposing the sticky side and have the students press their shapes on to the sticky contact paper. The students must fill up the entire sheet of contact paper that they are given so that the contact paper does not stick directly to the windows. Use the suction cups to hang the decorations in the windows, giving the windows a near stained-glass look.

Hanging Decor
-
Create hanging ocean themes decorations using string, some ocean creatures cut of out construction paper, tissue paper and glue. Provide the students with cut-out shapes of ocean life. Then let them attach tissue paper to the shapes with their paintbrushes and glue. You can give the students tissue paper squares, shredded tissue paper or a variety of tissue paper shapes to use in their design. Add long strands of green tissue paper to the hanging decorations for seaweed. Use a hole punch to punch holes in the ends of each decoration, attach string through the holes to the piece, and hang the creations from the ceiling with a thumbtack.
Mural
-
One or more large sheets of paper taped to the wall provides a canvas for young artists. Draw out an ocean theme on the paper with a marker before the students begin creating. You will only need the shapes of things, such as fish and seaweed. Then cut out squares of tissue paper in numerous colors and provide the students with paintbrushes and craft glue. The students should dab the tissue paper squares with the craft glue using the paintbrushes and apply the squares to the figures on the mural to fill the figures in. Encourage the students to be creative with the tissue paper and make their ocean creatures colorful. Don’t forget to fill in the background as well.
