My Gateway Laptop Power Button Is Not Working
Although numerous factors can cause power problems on your laptop, many Gateway owners report a trend in the occurrence of power button malfunctions in their portable computers. While this problem seems rampant in many Gateway laptops, a more generic cause may be at fault for your power problem. Eliminating the easiest probable cause first helps narrow down the actual cause and possibly prevents unnecessary repair expenses.

Power Button Cable Failure
-
This issue is a fairly common occurrence among Gateway laptops, as in some models, the cable connecting the power button to the motherboard is situated close to the monitor's hinge. Due to its location, the cable tends to suffer wear as the screen is opened and closed, ultimately resulting in failure.
Other Causes
-
Sometimes a power button will not turn on the laptop because there is no power to access. A faulty wall outlet, malfunctioning adapter or dead battery will all prevent the laptop from powering up. If your Gateway has suffered any unfortunate falls or splashes recently, this could have jostled something loose or caused a malfunction or short circuit inside the machine.

Troubleshooting
-
Check the LED on the adapter cord to see if any electricity is flowing through the cord, and verify that the outlet it's connected to has power. Make sure the battery is properly seated and its contacts are clean and free of corrosion. If the outlet and adapter are functional, and the battery seems well-charged, the problem most likely lies inside your Gateway. Examine the machine for any signs of damage from rough handling or spills for evidence of possible internal damage.
Solution
-
Replace faulty batteries or adapter cords and move to a working outlet. If you're feeling confident and adequately tech-savvy, you can open your Gateway and examine the internal components, looking for signs of short circuits or broken parts for replacement. Make sure all cables are securely connected and check the cord running from the power button to the motherboard. A brave do-it-yourselfer or an experienced Gateway repair technician can perform repairs as necessary.
