Scholarships for Children of Deceased Veterans in Michigan

If you are the child of a deceased veteran from Michigan, you may be eligible for scholarship money to help you pay for college. The Michigan state government administers one such program. Two state organizations also provide scholarships to the survivors of Michigan veterans killed in action. In addition, there are a host of national scholarship programs for which you should also consider applying.

  1. Michigan Higher Education Assistance Authority

    • The Michigan Higher Education Assistance Authority administers scholarship support to the children of deceased veterans through the Children of Veterans' Tuition Grant Program. To be eligible, an applicant must be pursuing an undergraduate degree within the state. Eligible applicants may receive up to $2,800 per academic year through the program. Downloadable scholarship applications are available on the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs website (michigan.gov/dmva).

    American Legion Auxiliary Department of Michigan

    • The American Legion Auxiliary Department of Michigan offers three scholarships to survivors of Michigan veterans now deceased. All three are valued at $500. The Medical Career Scholarship is offered to students seeking a degree related to medicine, the Memorial Scholarship is available to students seeking non-medical degrees and the Non-Traditional Scholarship is available to students age 22 or older. You must be the daughter, granddaughter or great-granddaughter of a veteran and must be a resident of Michigan. Applications are available on the American Legion Auxiliary Department of Michigan website (michalaux.org) and must be submitted each year by March 15.

    American Legion Department of Michigan

    • The American Legion Department of Michigan offers two annual scholarships, each worth $500. Both are available to the children or grandchildren of veterans who are now deceased. The William D. & Jewell Brewer Scholarship is awarded on the basis of an applicant's GPA and financial need, and may be used to study at any school. The Guy M. Wilson Scholarship is only available to students who plan to study at a college within the state of Michigan. Applicants must be state residents and hold a high school GPA of at least 2.5.

    National Programs

    • There are a variety of national scholarship programs as well. Organizations that grant scholarships to the children of deceased veterans include the Fisher House Foundation, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Vietnam Veterans of America, the Folds of Honor Foundation, AMVETS and the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund.
