Handmade Burp Cloth With Ribbon

Babies can use multiple burp cloths each day.

Your precious little one can make many unexpected messes and having a burp cloth ready when you need it can be a lifesaver. A handmade burp cloth is inexpensive and gives you the freedom to add a bit of style to your infant accessories. Your creativity is the limit when designing these simple burp cloths.

  1. Cloth

    • When considering creating decorative burp cloths, look for clean cloth diapers that are approximately 14 by 20 inches in size. Whether the cloth is two- or three-ply does not make a big difference when making a burp cloth, but the cloth should be made from 100 percent cotton. Wash the cloth before beginning your sewing project in case of any shrinking.

    Thread

    • Selecting two different colors of sewing thread will ensure that the color does not show through on the plain side of the burp cloth. The thread used for top stitching the ribbon onto the cloth should be the same color as the ribbon itself, while the bobbin thread should be white in color, to blend in with the cloth diaper. One hundred percent cotton or a poly-blended thread is appropriate for decorating a burp cloth with ribbon.

    Ribbon

    • Although any style of ribbon can be sewn onto the burp cloth, a sturdier ribbon, such as a wide grosgrain ribbon, is generally easier to work with. The burp cloth can feature one simple ribbon down the center of the cloth, a ribbon down each side of the cloth, or a mixture of three to four colorful ribbons stacked together at the bottom. Tucking the ends of the ribbon under before you begin sewing will prevent future fraying.

    Gifting

    • Handmade burp cloths make stylish and practical gifts for the new mom in your life. For an attractive gift presentation, iron a set of burp cloths and tie them together with a colorful ribbon. The cloths can coordinate with the baby’s nursery or even reflect the colors of the new dad’s favorite football team for a thoughtful touch.
