Assist your child in decorating a birthday calendar.

Your little one's birthday is coming up soon, and you're just as excited as she is. Help her put together a birthday reminder project that reinforces the concept of numbers and days, or a craft that the two of you can use year after year as the day of her birth approaches.

  1. Birthday Dice

    • Purchase two large plastic blocks to make into birthday dice for your child. Print images of birthday cakes, candles, letters and numbers from the computer, and help your child color them before cutting them out and taping them onto the dice. On one die, tape pictures that represent what your child is going to do on her birthday, or things she'll be able to do once her birthday arrives. For instance, tape pictures of a birthday cake and candles onto the die to remind her that she'll eat cake in her favorite flavor and blow out the candles on the cake at her party. On the other die, tape the paper image of the age your child will turn on her birthday. Use numbers in two different shades to adorn the sides of the die. Tape the letters that spell your child's age on the remaining sides of the die so your little one will associate the words with the numbers. Roll the dice with your child every day the week before her birthday to get her even more excited about the event.

    Calendar Craft

    • Use a ruler to draw squares on poster board to make it look like a calendar. Help your child decorate the squares of the calendar with stickers that feature his favorite cartoon characters, or stencils in the shape of his initials. Use puff paint or spray paint to add color to the craft, and cover the poster board with clear, sticky-backed paper so you can use it again next year. Purchase small gift bows for the calendar, and fasten a Velcro strip to the back of each bow to coordinate with the adhesive you've placed in each calendar square. During your child's birthday month, help him place a bow in a calendar square each day. Reserve a large, elaborate bow for to place in the square that represents your child's birthday.

    Birthday Wall List

    • Purchase a large poster board or piece or stock paper, and use a ruler to create lines on the paper so you and your child can create a birthday list a few days before you celebrate. This craft is particularly ideal for a milestone birthday. For instance, your child may write on her list that she's preparing for her birthday by getting school supplies and getting ready to meet new friends if she's turning 5 and going to kindergarten. Or, she may write one new item on the list each day before her birthday like "Get rid of all my little kid toys" or "Start writing a journal" if she's turning 10 or 12 this year. Cover the list with sticky-backed paper to preserve the craft.

    Birthday Wheel

    • Cut a large piece of cardboard into a circle to create a birthday wheel. Tack a piece of construction paper cut into the shape of an arrow in the center of the wheel after decorating each section of the cardboard with words like "Help Mom bake my birthday cake" or "Pick out my birthday outfit." A week or so before your child's birthday, let him spin the wheel to see what the day's birthday-related activity will be. On your child's birthday, present him with an oversized greeting card telling him how happy you are to celebrate this special day with him -- a keepsake he can store with his birthday wheel.
