Kiwi birds use their long beaks to forage for small worms and berries.

A kiwi bird pom pom craft celebrates the brown national bird of New Zealand. According to David Braun of National Geographic, there are five species of the flightless and nocturnal kiwi birds which are only found in New Zealand. Craft your own kiwi with a few materials for a project simple enough for children.

  1. Materials

    • A large brown pompom is the body and base of your kiwi bird pom pom craft. Orange craft foam is needed to create the bird's beak and feet. Googly eyes, a pencil, scissors and glue are other materials needed for the project.

    Preparations

    • Draw two basic bird feet shapes on the orange craft foam. A "W" shape, approximately 2-by-2-inches, works for a foot. Cut the feet for the kiwi using a pair of scissors. Draw a long, skinny triangle about 1/2-by-2-inches for a beak.

    Completion

    • Squeeze glue at the back of each W-shaped foot and press the brown pom pom on top of the feet. Glue the beak, with the point facing down, into the center of the kiwi's face. Add googly eyes to the top and either side of the beak.

    Uses

    • Once your kiwi is finished, it can be used in a variety of ways. Pin a ribbon to the back of the kiwi pom pom bird if you want to hang it up. It can be pinned with a straight pin, or a brooch pin can be attached to the back of the craft. If you glue a magnet to the back, it can be used on the refrigerator.
