MacBook Text Keeps Highlighting

You can check your spelling with Apple’s native word processor.

When you type on your MacBook, you could find that the text keeps highlighting misspelled words or grammatical errors. Apple sells two MacBook models as of the date of publication – the MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air. Each MacBook comes with free applications that you can use to type text, and these applications have spell check and grammar check features that you can disable, stopping them from highlighting words.

  1. TextEdit

    • Click “TextEdit” on the Dock of your MacBook to launch Apple’s native word processor. TextEdit enables you to create documents whose settings you can adjust to change the font, text size and style. TextEdit can check your words as you type them, or you can check them when you’ve finished typing. You can also set TextEdit to correct spelling mistakes as you type.

    Mail

    • Click “Mail” on the Dock of your MacBook to launch Apple’s native email application. Click “New Message” to create a new blank message and start typing. If words are highlighted as you type, it means Mail’s spell check is enabled, and the grammar check may also be enabled. You can use this feature to help you catch mistakes before sending a message to someone.

    Safari

    • Click “Safari” on the Dock of your MacBook to start Apple’s native Web browsing application. When you type text in a website, such as while writing a forum posting, filling out an online form or entering a search term, Safari will highlight words if spell check is enabled. This is convenient for people who don’t want to launch a separate word processor to check spelling for text they are posting online.

    Spell Check Settings

    • Launch TextEdit, Mail or Safari on your MacBook when you want to change the spell check and grammar check settings. Click “Edit” from the application’s menu. Click “Spelling and Grammar,” click “Check Spelling,” and then click “Never” to disable spell checking. When spell checking is disabled, grammar checking is also disabled. Click “Edit,” “Check Spelling” and then click “Check Document Now” if you want to manually check spelling, such as when you have finished typing a document.
