Community organizations can apply for a music education grant with the Mockingbird Foundation.

Private foundations provide music education grants to community organizations. These grants are intended to encourage youth and adult participation in music. Studies show that music education programs help students become successful in society, school, and life and with developing intelligence. Since funding is limited in public schools, grants help to support music education programs throughout the community.

  1. Mockingbird Foundation Grant

    • The Mockingbird Foundation is a volunteer nonprofit organization comprised of fans of the music group Phish. The foundation offers music education grants to nonprofit community organizations. One-time grants up to $5,000 are awarded to organizations that offer music education for children under 18 years of age. Registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations within the United States are eligible to apply for a grant. A letter of inquiry detailing the funding request is required prior to submitting a full grant proposal. Each year, inquiries are accepted online prior to the August 1st deadline.

    Muzak Heart & Soul Foundation

    • The Muzak Heart & Soul Foundation's Music Matter Grant Program provides grants up to $12,000 to nonprofit music education programs. Muzak, the world's largest business music provider, founded the Muzak Heart & Soul Foundation in an effort to redefine and expand the scope of music education. During the grant application process, funding priority is given to music education programs serving kids in grades K to12, disadvantaged youths and programs that need basic music instruments and educational material.

    NAMM Foundation Grants

    • The National Association of Music Merchants Foundation provides funding for the advancement of active participation in music making for people of all ages. They have several grant programs for music education. The Wanna Play Fund provides instruments to non-professional music makers in community-based music programs. The NAMM Foundation Program grant provides funding to community organizations with group music programs facilitated within senior homes, hospitals, youth groups, or parks. Organizations with an after-school music program and music educator training program are also eligible for funding. Grants applications are awarded by invitation only.

    Local Grant Programs

    • The Kulas Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio, awards music education grants to nonprofit community organizations within Cuyahoga County. There are two special funding priorities: Student Ticket Plan Requests and Music Therapy Requests. The Student Ticket Plan provides funding to community colleges and universities to help assist young people attend a musical cultural event. The Music Therapy Request provides funding for students pursuing a degree in music therapy. Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute provides funding for the Musical Connections program to community organizations in Los Angeles, Berkeley, New Orleans, Seattle, Austin and Boston. These organizations provide free interactive performances, creative projects and artist residences for hospitals, senior centers, or homeless shelters.
