A Yule Log Project for Kids
The yule log, also known as “Buche de Noel” in French, is a long-standing Christmas staple. This cake is made of sponge cake rolled in cream or jam, then covered in butter-cream icing. Food historians believe this tradition began in the 19th century. This year, let your kids create the yule log for your holiday festivities or to share with their classmates. The children will appreciate the opportunity to be creative with this kid-friendly project. Does this Spark an idea?

For this project you'll need the following: Sheet of chocolate spongecake, a cake spatula, one, 16-ounce container of whipped topping, vanilla extract, cocoa powder, a piping bag, white icing, marzipan mushrooms and holly leaves and berries, gold foil, holiday sprinkles, and other edible holiday cake decorations.
Prepare the Cake
-
Lay the sheet of sponge cake on a clean surface. In a bowl, combine the container of whipped topping and a teaspoon of vanilla extract. Mix well. Spread the frosting thinly across the sheet of cake. Roll it up carefully in jelly roll fashion.

Frosting
-
Add two tablespoons of cocoa powder to the remainder of the frosting and combine well. Frost the log with the chocolate frosting. Fill the piping bag with white icing. Make log rings and swirls all around the log, like you would find on tree bark.
Decorating
-
Lastly, decorate the cake with the edible Christmas decorations. Yule logs are traditionally decorated with mushrooms. Let your child be creative and decorate the log as desired. You can also be creative and decorate the plate with miniature Christmas figures like Santa Claus, Christmas trees and reindeer.
