Stay-at-home moms have numerous options for careers working from home.

Homeworkers provide both permanent and temporary help for businesses, generally on a piecework or hourly basis, from a work location at the employee's home. The expanding opportunities for telecommuting and remote work allow stay-at-home moms a chance to earn a living wage while continuing to be home with their young children. ABC News reported in 2006 that approximately 80 percent of the employment locations voted "best" on the Fortune magazine list for working moms offered telecommuting opportunities for work-from-home mothers.

  1. Medical Billing and Coding

    • Working for an insurance company as a remote medical coder or home billing agent offers complete physical independence from the company office. Under this home work situation, homeworkers take information from medical and dentist offices and transform the information into a language and digital code recognized by the insurance company. The American Health Information Management Association defines coding as the "transformation of narrative descriptions of diseases, injuries, and health-care procedures into numeric or alphanumeric designations." Home billing agents also partner with medical offices to use hardware and software to produce paper and online bills for patients. Some remote-home billing offices also receive and process payments from medical clients on behalf of the provider.

    Online Content and Correspondence Author

    • Online content creators research material and write text for client websites. Mothers transfer content via email without the requirement to physically appear at an office. Correspondence authors provide writing services for business professionals ill at ease with writing letters or creating formal text to answer email or snail-mail correspondence. Stay-at-home moms have the option of working as a piecework correspondence author or as part of an ongoing job for regular clients.

    Website Construction and Graphic Artists

    • Mothers with artistic skills and web knowledge have options to work as independent contractors or part- or full-time remote employees for tech firms offering website construction for individuals or companies. Off-site working moms complete assignments and load the finished work on Internet websites for client review.

Online Technical Assistance or Telephone Operator

    • Mothers proficient in one or more computer programs or in the operation of new technologies have the option to work at home as technical consultants. Tech services schedule moms to work shifts throughout the day and night to help online or telephone clients with their technical questions about a specific program or device. Clients also text questions or telephone the work-at-home moms for real-time assistance.

    Craftsperson Representative

    • Stay-at-home representatives for home repair workers, craftspeople and home-care services offer a reliable contact person for potential clients interested in hiring temporary help to repair damage, renovate homes or assist with health-care needs. The moms provide scheduling services for a flat fee or a percentage of the work hired through the telephone contact. Moms also offer advertising services and set the calendar for craftspeople, including finish carpenters, professional painters, home organizers and even party planners.
